Specification guide

Specify the whole light line.

Start with the experience you want to create. Connect each design choice to an identifiable product, a documented value and a coordinated detail.

Product identity

Establish the product identity.

Give the selection a precise identity: product family, model or article code, and the options that define the supplied configuration. Keep the document revision with the specification so a later substitution can be checked against the same requirements.

Separate the design target from the confirmed product value. Where a record is needed, leave the requirement open for review rather than carrying a figure across from a similar-looking profile.

Light

Describe and document the light.

Light output describes how much visible light is emitted. Distribution describes where it goes. Read them together when assessing a concealed detail, a visible line or a surface to be illuminated.

CCT describes the color appearance of white light; CRI concerns how a source renders colors relative to a reference. Neither replaces a review of actual materials. Where color is critical, request the available color-quality information and compare a representative sample in context.

  • Output: the stated value and the configuration or measurement conditions it applies to.
  • Color: the selected CCT or color option and its applicable product record.
  • Color rendering: the documented CRI for the selected configuration.
  • Distribution: the relevant photometric file or measured record, where provided.

Geometry

Resolve the geometry.

Resolve the cross-section and the route as separate decisions. Visible width, recess, mounting and cable exit affect the architectural detail; bending direction and minimum radius determine whether the intended path is suitable.

Show ends, junctions and changes of direction on the drawing. Confirm available lengths and permitted cut intervals in the applicable documentation before fixing the surrounding construction.

  • Cross-section and visible emitting surface.
  • Permitted bending direction and model-specific minimum radius.
  • Mounting arrangement, junctions and cable exits.
  • Required lengths and the limitations stated in the applicable documentation.

Power & control

Connect power and control.

Record input voltage, power and load alongside the selected driver and control method. Matching one headline value does not establish that the combination will operate as intended.

Include the intended dimming behavior in the brief. Review compatibility across the proposed operating range and ask how the selected combination is assessed for light-output variation over time. Resolve control questions before procurement.

Operating environment

Check the operating conditions.

Describe the real environment, including ambient conditions, exposure and connection locations. Review ingress protection and temperature limits for the finished configuration, rather than treating a product-family label as approval for every installation.

Lumen maintenance concerns retained light output over time. It does not describe every possible system failure or establish a warranty. Read the stated test conditions and scope before using a lifetime-related value in a comparison.

Keep unresolved values visible.

Bring the light line, mounting, connection and seal, driver, load and control into one coordinated schedule. Cross-reference the relevant drawings and identify outstanding technical questions.

This worksheet contains no preset product ratings. Complete it using the selected model’s records, and obtain written clarification where a requirement or combination is not covered.
